The local councils were recently granted to the Secretary of Communication of the national CEN of Morena, Camila Martínez, and to the green leader, René Vivanco. In this context, the intention of Leticia Varela, supported by the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to gain ground is highlighted. However, recognized figures have indicated that she seeks to run for mayor without the backing of either the head of government, Clara Brugada, or the Morena leadership.
For her part, in the previous 2024 elections, she tried to compete for the mayoralty, but the structure led by Sebastián Ramírez opted for Leticia Varela, a historical profile of Morena in Benito Juárez. Nevertheless, within the party, she generates distrust due to her alleged internal attacks via social media against Morena leaders.
In Mexico City, both local governments and congressional representatives are settling into their new responsibilities for the coming years until 2027. In the ruling party, figures are already emerging who seek to stand out to compete for different positions, such as Eduardo del Mazo. The latter is trying to show himself close to the Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, on social media, although in Morena it is pointed out that the official is more focused on security than on capital politics.
Although the current focus of the government and the party is to fulfill promises and manage day-to-day affairs, there are figures who are already starting to work to secure their own spaces in future elections. This is the case of a businessman who aspires to participate in the internal race of the Benito Juárez district, which has generated discomfort among established local leaderships.
Several sources agree that this businessman, without a long history in Morena, has aroused distrust among experienced local leaders with established connections in the mayor's office. Although there are more than two years until the mid-term elections, where Congress and the 16 mayoralties of Mexico City will be renewed, movements and preparations for this scenario are already noticeable.
